I think anything that would benefit our youth in sports and recreation, and the community, never deserves a " are you kidding " but just like most ppl on this site, MOST people gets there backs up when it come to change or programs for the youth,,so sad,,,, good idea Kane, and your heart is in the right place,,should follow up with a letter to the City !!
Why? Good kids get their money, shoes, ipods, etc stolen from the thugs of all the deadbeat parents in this town. I grew up by the current skate park and and used to play by the creek no problem but now i will not let my children attend the skate park unattended.
I would like to see one on the west also. i would like to see a off lease park also on east and the west side of the city!! and yes write to city council!! and come to city council and talk also.
Oh yes just what we need another skate park. Look at the jerks that are always hanging out at the other one!!! A lot of kids are afraid to go there because of all the things that go on there. Not a Chance I agree with you completely!!
I believe this would be a bad idea. East flat is relatively safe and there is not a lot of violence/gang/drug activity...for the most part. A skatepark is available in the city already, we do not need one in every area.
If you want one in the east and/or west you better start fundraising now. They are not cheap. The one by the Art Hauser Center was given a large donation by the Kinsmen Club. The City paid a fraction of the cost but does pay to have it staffed and cleaned. The Kinsmen Skatepark was spearheaded by a group of parents and skateboarders that did most of the fundraising themselves. The park was not a hand out by anyone and was a lot of work by a lot of people.
Skateboarding is a leisure activity. If you want a skate park near you, convince an entrepeneur to build a for-profit one, or front the funds to build a public one yourself, why should the taxpayers foot the bill? As others have pointed out, the existing skate park has turned out sooooo well...
BTW, I play paintball. I think the city should build a paintball park in my neighbourhood. And a shooting range. Maybe a motocross track too. Do you get the point yet? The taxpayers shouldn't have to subsidize peoples hobbies.
the only thing we got from the east hill skate park is vandelism! Vandals with skateboards spray painting our neigbourhood, garages, cars, breaking into our cars, etc. I chased a few kids last weekend that were breaking into my car, they ran back to the skate park.
i skated for years, had fun, broke a few rules ( grindin benches, curbs, etc. etc. ) but never , ever did I wreck someone elses property or take something that wasnt mine.
Taxpayers have already paid for the city to provide a Skatepark. Buy your child a transit pass, if you dont want to drive them. Also their is a skatepark located on Central Avenue @ TenfootToque.
