The dogs are boxers, not pit bulls. The fence is currently being replaced. I'm sorry if they frightened you, but I assure you they aren't aggressive, they are just not accustomed to pedestrians.
Robin thank you for being so responsive! I bet you have some lovely dogs. Sometimes, when dogs are left alone, they feel scared. You may legitimately never have witnessed them lunging at the fence as people walked by. Keeping them tethered, while you are not in the yard, will increase the comfort of pedestrians.
Welcome to the neighborhood and I think your new fence is looking really good so far!
One of them is moving back home to Missouri with my son. I've witnessed their enthusiastic jumping on that old fence and can see why people who don't know them would be startled. We just moved in and getting the fence replaced was always top priority. They are sweet babies.
My boys and I met these dogs. Their enthusiasm and exuberance initially startled my boys, but with my encouragement and support, my sons spoke with the dogs and petted them. No problem.
Thank you for replacing the fence. There are/were gaping holes in the broken fence that even a large dog like these can almost fit through, and it's not clear that they are friendly when alone, which would make people very nervous walking by (unless they are a neighbor and had a chance to meet them)
Fence is breaking again and tilting into the sidewalk as these two large dogs lunge at hit. Absolutely terrifying to small children and other people who may not know that they are supposedly “friendly”
Yes agreed, fence was never raised, only repaired, now breaking again. This is no just an issue of a fence: these dogs should not be left outside on their own to bark at people and jump. They should be supervised. Best practice for dogs is to give them a cool, comfortable den indoors when you cannot be home to supervise. You should walk your dog to give them exercise, then be around when they are in the yard. These dogs are stressed out by pedestrians- it's not an issue of growing "accustomed" to walkers. I'm concerned that this issue is ongoing for multiple years.

When my sons and I pet these dogs, they were calm and on leashes held by their owners. We have not tried to pet them when they've been in their yard, behind that sagging fence, nor would we.
One got out of the yard somehow, and I was able to grab hold of its collar as it came over to me seeking attention. In my limited experience with them, the dogs have been okay, albeit a little hyper.

Two hungry-looking, large pit bulls are growling and jumping at the fence.
Even if the dogs can't jump over, it is minutes away from breaking entirely, at the corner. Dogs may run out and eat someone.
Dogs are not always out in the yard

You never pet a strange dog especially when it is on their own property.
