Yes! We hear horns and skids daily at this intersection. It's a wonder there aren't more crashes. We've been asking for this for years. It would be an inexpensive solution--2 stop signs, road striping and changing 2 yellow lenses on the flasher to red.
I totally support four way stop signs on our corner. I spoke to one of the responding officers and he said that this corner has been an ongoing conversation in the district and he said “Good luck”. Not very encouraging, our Alderman suggested to complete a city streets application, I feel I’m at fault as I haven’t done that yet. But this has been an ongoing issue for the almost 14yrs I’ve lived on this corner, and have witnessed many accidents that should have been addressed without such an application. I would hope that it doesn’t take a fatality to make this dangerous corner a four way stop!
UPDATE: another T-bone collision this morning at the same intersection (2nd straight day). This time impact to the driver's side door of car going east on Central (no injuries). Involved a neighbor from Willard St.
I am happy to talk with the City's traffic engineers to see if TT&P would support a four-way stop at this intersection, or if another solution is called for. Stay tuned.
Thank you Adam, that's great to hear! I would just add from my own observation that the traffic volume on Central through this intersection is really quite low, so I doubt that a new signal would cause any congestion.
Jonjay not sure where you live on Central but there is constant traffic at this corner. I agree we might not need a traffic light but we do NEED STOP signs. A lot cheaper than a life lost!!!
@JD totally agree that many cars come through--I just meant there's not so much volume that adding a stop sign on Central would cause traffic to back up at the intersection.
Yes, yes, yes! It's a matter of time before someone gets killed in this intersection (if it hasn't happened already). This intersection should be a four-way stop.
Agree, this intersection is on my running route. The cars are flying down Central through Willard. There are stop signs at Willard and Alden; why not Willard and Central?
A 4 way stop is needed asap. When walking the neighborhood with my babies, crossing that intersection is a nightmare. I feel like Im playing a game of dodge ball, where i have to dodge the cars.....its awful
No doubt, this intersection is a big problem. It is time for action. The question is, what can be done? Put another way, what solutions will the City's TT&P Department support?
In response to public calls for action, and at my urging, TT&P Director Doug Hausladen instructed his senior traffic engineer to examine the crash data to see if the intersection meets the necessary criteria for a four-way stop. I will share the results of that analysis when I learn them. If the professional assessment supports a four-way stop, then great! If not, then we would have to make a strong case to the traffic commission in order for that body to override the professional recommendation. Not easy, but possible.
In the meantime, as we await the professional assessment, I say that we should submit a Complete Streets Application, which is the mechanism for residents to submit requests for traffic calming and other streetscape improvement measures. I have filled out these before and am happy to assist. I will reach out to neighbors soon to find a time this week or next to do this.
Dear Neighbors, I submitted a Complete Streets Application for a 4-way stop at Central and Yale/Willard this morning. Please email the following officials to express your support of the application: mfiguero@newhavenct.gov, dhausladen@newhavenct.gov . If you would like a copy of the application that I submitted, please email me at auguste.fortin@yale.edu . Thank you.
Good afternoon - Auguste is not correct that emailing me will be of assistance. A request has been submitted for a 4-way stop study. This work takes a couple of months to perform as traffic counts are required and there is a bit of a queue for work related to construction before the season ends. This is a routine analysis of crash data and the department, as Alder Marchand stated, will submit a recommendation based on the data gathered. This is one in a hundred of requests and will be approached in a diligent and safe manner by the department. In the meantime, residents can request motor vehicle enforcement through their management teams and district manager.
Dear Mr. Hausladen, Thank you for correcting my error that emailing you will be of assistance. Thank you, too, for the update and education on the process. This information is very helpful and reassuring; the silence until now led to everything from complaints about non-responsiveness to conspiracy theories; your note clears the air and informs the citizenry. I also apreciate the link to the information on warrants for stop signs. Based on it, I have confidence that, when this issue reaches to head of the queue, a good solution will be found. I hope that you understand our sense of urgency regarding this intersection--there have been at least 6 crashes so far this year, most recently last night. Thank you for your leadership on this.
Thank you August for sharing Mr. Hausladen response with us. I was so upset last night I kind of lost it and I apologize. It just seems like it’s such an easy solution with stop signs, but I understand now it’s a matter of patience and that the application is not going to be ignored! Your diligence is greatly appreciated!!
Mr. Hausladen: I hope you'll be able to share results from your analysis soon. On behalf of my neighbors I'm attaching a photo from another crash today at this intersection.
Also, perhaps these data can help. When I looked in October I found two 2017 crashes in the state data: crash ID's 356553 (2/2/17) and 367111 (3/2/17). I've posted photos from three recent crashes on this thread (in addition to the many others mentioned by other residents). These five crashes in a 12 month period represent a "crash problem" (Criterion 2) under the state agency guidance you posted, sufficient to justify a multiway stop. https://www.cga.ct.gov/2005/rpt/2005-R-0204.htm
Great news! Tuesday night the New Haven Traffic Commission approved our request for a four-way stop at this intersection. See excerpt below from the NHI story:
"Auguste Fortin and Jeanne Dubin have seen at least seven to ten crashes outside their homes near the intersection of Central Avenue, Yale Avenue and Willard Street.
"They celebrated winning a years-long quest Tuesday night to convince the city to put four-way stop signs at that intersection in the hope of seeing far fewer crashes in the future."
