New pedestrian signals were installed around Gateway College at Temple, Church, Crown, and George Streets. The signal emitted for "Don't Walk" is the sound usually emitted for "Walk" at the other pedestrial signals in the Yale Hospital Area, by State Street Station, Orange St., and elsewhere in New Haven. The Gateway signals emit a different from the usual signal for "Walk"; a unescorted blind person will be confused and will walk out onto oncoming traffic, perhaps deriving an injury, for which the city will be liable and the lawyers will have a field day. I have a sister who is blind which is why I am hypervigilant about this. The new signals seem to be a different manufacturer from what is used elsewhere in New Haven. Of course the bllind person will not hear the pedestrian signal saying "Wait" because the blind person will not see the button to push. The visually disabled of many types, the elderly, and those walking at dark are all vunerable. I had a NHPD officer also check the discrepency; he concurred with me and told me to contact you as he would try to contact Traffic and Safety. It will be a nightmare for the city and Gateway if some one is hurt, perhaps fatally. Thank you for your prompt response to this potentially fatal problem.
