opened 3 months ago - Hoosick Street eastbound in this area is worse than ever. Need to have two lanes all the way up to Walmart OR have pavement markings indicating that the LEFT LANE ENDS or start issuing traffic tickets to aggressive drivers who arbitrarily cut in front of drivers in the traveling lane as the left lane ends. Traffic comes to a complete standstill as drivers in the left/ending lane try to cut in at the last minute. It is dangerous and aggravating. Millions of dollars were spent "improving" this area of Hoosick Street. It was infinitely better before when it was 2 lanes all the way up. Need to either improve the traffic flow or start issuing traffic tickets for aggressive drivers cutting in ahead of drivers in the traveling lane.
I have now taken matters into my own hands, and started taking up both lanes, straddling the middle line, (if possible) as soon as I get past the street before the first gas station. I highly suggest this, b/c they (the students) have reportedly high IQs and thus, they learn fast.
This was an Joe Bruno improvement that cost millions and did little more than move the merge further east on Hoosick street. All that needs to be done is right before south lake the right lane needs to be RIGHT Turn only, Warn drivers further down hoosick street and put in a concrete right turn only , very quickly if enough signs and line markings are made folks will learn, Also all roads near the top (2 by school and one across the street) should become 1 ways IN ONLY and no left turns when driving east into the school 2 roads folks can access that area using South Lake to access that school area.
Let's face it what the city needs to do is build a bypass around Troy. They could put an exit off of Alt Rt 7 to the north west of Comfortex and have it come down neat Tibbits Ave in Green Island. Cross the river there into North Central Troy (most of the buildings are being torn down anyway) and have it go up through Frear Park like Rochester did with Rt 390 through Genesee Valley Park. Then have the bypass go through farm land and come out on Rt 7 near Country View Dinner. That might not be the perfect route but we need something. The whole state of VT comes through Hoosick St. twice a day.
Part of the problem is many people don't know which is the proper lane to be in. It is not the left lane that ends. That is the traveling lane. My fiance and I were victims in a hit and run there a couple of months ago. The police told us that no one in the left lane is ever at fault in accidents there because the right lane is only a turning lane for the businesses. I agree...this is enraging every single day and needs to be addressed now to stop further accidents and road rage incidents. We need police to park at the gas stations and hand out tickets to all those racing up the right lane to cut people off.
I moved from that area 3+ years ago and am sitting here laughing that this is still an issue. What a joke all that construction work was. Glad someones pockets got filled on that deal.
Better signage that RH lane is a Turn Only lane. Set up some enforcement (plenty of revenue opportunity here) to address the violators, get people's attention and quell the agressive behavior.
Bigger issue is people blocking the intersection so that vehicles on Lake cannot cross when their light turns green.
Let's face it...Hoosick St. has been and will continue to be a major issue until something more drastic is done. They added the center turning lane which certainly was helpful, but the congestion that builds up at the 2-to-1 lane merge heading east on Rt. 7 just past North/South Lake is just plain terrible. Traffic most afternoons into the early evening is gridlocked. I live on Mt. Pleasant Ave (the dead end between the Mr. Subb and the Sunoco) ... and let me tell you I feel like I take my life in my hands every time i pull in or out of my road. I've almost been rear-ended on multiple occasions turning right down my street. It's a rather sharp right hand turn, so slowing down is important. Everyone is so focused on merging...they aren't paying attention to me making a right turn. It's very dangerous. Either the right lane of Hoosick St. heading East at N/S Lake needs to be right turn only (which will ultimately result in even more of a backup heading down Hoosick), or the second lane needs to be extended at least until Walmart. I realize it will involve relocating people living very close to Hoosick St., but this situation can't continue forever as-is. Business is picking up in the area, so let's make sure the infrastructure can support it!

It has been a challenge for years.
