Description
55th St. between Shattuck and Telegraph is a busy car/bus/bicycle corridor. Bicycles are supposed to share the road, but the on-street parking, often of large trucks/RVs, limits the space on the road. Cars are speeding to Hwy. 24 onramp. Buses roll through and there is a bus stop on 55th that pushes bikes into traffic. Could parking be eliminated except in front of residences near Shattuck, and dedicated bike lanes implemented the rest of the street? Or narrow the sidewalks to accommodate bike lanes? Make the sidewalks the bike lanes? It's really hard to get across Telegraph for bikes, I don't enjoy coming down Telegraph and turning left across traffic at 55th. Today I got doored by a double-parked Lyft on 55th. 😟

Thanks for making this report, and I'm sorry to hear about your close call today. I've been asking Oakland staff to provide continuous bike lanes or a separated bike path through this block for many years, making space by removing the curbside parking through the underpass and on the side across from the houses on both sides of the underpass (already no parking in some spots due to the bus stops). I even went door to door on that block and surveyed neighbors about the proposal, most of who were supportive at the time.
The good news is that this bike lane was included in the Oakland bike plan update that was adopted by city council in 2019, but the bad news is that there is no proposed timeline so far as to when that work might be accomplished. There is a separate project on the rest of 55th Street to add painted buffers to the existing bike lanes which might happen in 2021, so my hope is that the Shattuck to Telegraph block can be done by then as well.
